Resources for Beginners

some sites to get you started

Start with the first link ( Learn the Net ) if you're fairly new to the internet, and work your way down as you learn more about web design. As you progress with your learning, go back to the Home Page and pick the category that best describes you and continue on.

If you're interested, here's my story about how I went from drapery workroom manager to webmaster. If I can do it so can you. I just hope you can learn from my mistakes, and do it the easy way.

Learn The Net - Several beginning articles and tips, on the internet in general, as well as building a website and doing e-commerce.. This is a really good place to start if you aren't too sure how to use the internet and how it all works together. Turn on your pop-up blocker, they are on every page.

HTML Goodies - The non-technical Introduction to website design.

WebMonkey for Kids - A fun place for kids, and 'kids at heart' to learn about the internet and websites.

WebMonkey's Beginner Page - This is a great place to start, especially if you don't even understand web terminology. They do a great job of explaining all the little details, as well as giving you even more resources to check out.

Yale Web Style Guide - This is some serious reading. But if you really want a guide that will  take you by the hand, and explain the steps, this is it. It's available in book form, but the online version is free for the reading.

Web Design Helper - This site has several helpful tutorials for beginners, regarding website design, using graphics, fonts and color.

Lynda.com - They have a membership fee which you can pay by the month or annually. It is well worth it! I took several of their courses in the beginning. It's nice because it is structured, and each lesson builds on the last. And you can always go back and review something if you forget how to do it.

Web Design Group - A little bit of everything.

Webmaster World - Glossary of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) terms.

What's the difference what font you use? There's a big difference, and Microsoft has a great section on fonts.
